Paradox of Peace & Quiet

I don’t how many times I have said to my lovely bride, “I just need a little peace & quiet.” Ever said that? What about, “I need a little me time.”  Well, I got my request the past two weeks.  Jude took my three sons to visit with her family in NY.  I had loads of peace & quiet. Ya know what? I didn’t know how to handle it. Over time, there’s an outside chance that it could be useful, but after nine years as a father, the quiet house was a little eery. It threw me off my game. No hugs, no wrestling, no refereeing, no hot dinners.  I looked around at all of the options, and it was overwhelming.  I noticed that I started staying at the office later and reading more which is fine, but a little boring.

My personal conclusion is that solitude and “peace & quiet” are great, but for short seasons and time frames. It’s why God gave Eve to Adam in the first place. Humans were created for connectedness, community & togetherness.  Don’t isolate yourself, and don’t let your friends be isolated. Simple, but not easy.
